Bobby Johnson abruptly resigns from Vanderbilt

Less than 2 months before the season opener against Northwestern, word out in Nashville is Vanderbilt’s Bobby Johnson was forced to resign today. There are mixed reports about the reason for his resignation, but you really don’t have to look further than his record after 8 season, 29-66. His only on-the-field highlight was a 16-14 win over Boston College in the 2008 Music City Bowl. In 2009, he was 0-8 in SEC play and only managed to win 2 games (Western Carolina & Rice). His 2009 Commodores were almost last statistically in every SEC offensive category.

There wasn’t much hope for the Commodores’ 2010 campaign either. Playing in the extremely tough SEC East is bad enough, but a huge question mark on the team’s offense was unsettling for the Commodores’ boosters. The defense should remain strong, but being on the field the entire game usually leads to giving up points.

It will be interesting to see how the team reacts to a new coach on such short notice.
