Alonzo Lawrence was once a Parade All-American and the southeast region’s 8th ranked recruit according to the Mobile Press-Register. In 2008 Lawrence signed a letter of intent and headed off to Tuscaloosa to play college football for the Alabama Crimson Tide. Expectations for the defensive back were high in ‘Bama country, but Lawrence redshirted his first year on campus and never saw playing time for the Tide. After that, things went downhill for Lawrence and ultimately ended with him transferring to Southern Miss.
Now, Lawrence announced late last week that he’s leaving Southern Miss for greener pastures. No explanation for his transfer has been given, but it’s rumored that he is headed to Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College to continue his collegiate career. Lawrence’s high school coach, Al Jones, believes that Lawrence is leaving USM for a fresh start at MGCC: “He’s been offered an opportunity at Gulf Coast Community College, I think it’s his only opportunity.”
Hopefully this is Lawrence’s last stop on his tour of the gulf region’s colleges. He’s a phenomenal athlete and it would be a shame to see him waste the talents and opportunity given to him.
