According to the New York Daily News, the NCAA and Yankee officials are in talks to possibly bring a bowl game to the new Yankee Stadium as early as the 2011 college football season. This comes on the heels of Army announcing that they will play four regular season games between 2010 and 2014 at the same venue. As of now the two sides are discussing scheduling arrangements and the financial aspects for the bowl.

The Gotham Bowl, New York’s first attempt at hosting a bowl, was played during the 1961 and 1962 college football seasons. The game was held at the old Yankee Stadium in ’61 and at the New York Polo Grounds in ’62. The bowl dissolved after only two season due to a variety of issues including bowl payouts and poor media coverage as the result of a New York newspaper strike.

The majority of college bowls are played outside in warm weather climates with the exception of a few that are played up north in domed stadiums. The NCAA would  more than likely schedule a New York bowl early in the bowl season to try and reduce the chances of it being affected by inclement weather.

If the NCAA and Yankee officials can hammer out an agreement college football fans will be in for a treat. There aren’t many fans that wouldn’t travel to the Big  Apple during the Christmas season to see their team play.
