Hokie Nation Continues to Hate on Sean Glennon

QB Sean Glennon (#7) continues to feel the fan pressure even after his collegiate playing days

Former Virginia Tech QB Sean Glennon has seen some ups and downs during his collegiate career. He went from being named MVP of the 2007 ACC championship game to riding the pine during his final game in the 2008 Orange Bowl. He took the reverse path from what most QBs take. In 2006 he threw for an impressive 2,191 yards; in 2007, his passing numbers dropped to 1,796; and in 2008, his passing yards plummeted to 743 total yards while being replaced by a younger and more athletic Tyrod Taylor.

Though he didn’t have the stellar senior year he was hoping for, he still entered the NFL draft in 2009. He failed to get drafted, but he signed as a free agent with the Minnesota Vikings. However, after a couple of months and with the signing of Brett Favre in the works, he was released in June 2009.

Few of those outside the Virginia Tech community probably didn’t realize the amount of hate mail and crank phone calls Glennon received during his Hokie days. The trash talking on web sites and the constant heckling took a toll on Glennon that pretty much destroyed his psyche. His last two years were particular rough and anytime he threw an interception or made a bad play, his inbox and voicemail would be filled with hate from fans.

I’m sure part of Glennon was relieved to get out of Blacksburg and leave the college game behind him. Unfortunately, the fans are not forgetful. While Glennon continues to train to fulfill his dream of playing on Sundays, he took a job working the phones as a mortgage consultant and loan officer for Home Savings and Trust Mortgage in Fairfax, Virginia. Much to his dismay, his fans have found him and continue to harass him while at work.

Fans will disrupt him at work by calling him and screaming words of hate and then quickly hanging up the phone. He also receives hate emails from his office that say they threaten to taint his business reputation in the area. It’s unfortunate that the fans continue to get on Glennon’s back. If you look at Virginia Tech football throughout Glennon’s career, the team’s success and failures are not solely attributed to him. There are 21 other players that either help you win or lose. But since he is the star QB and the team leader, he is the recipient of all the blame.

At this point, the fans just need to relax and rather than kick Glennon while he is down, they should support him and his dream of playing in the NFL. Here at the Matador, we applaud Glennon for his continued pursuit of his dream and we wish him a successful career in the NFL.
