Rumor is swirling around campus that USC’s Pete Carroll is the preferred coach for the newly vacant Seattle Seahawks post. This morning, the Seahawks fired first year coach Jim Mora citing lack of wins. The Seahawks immediately turned their attention to Carroll as he is thought to be the prefect candidate for the position.
As we recall, Carroll’s head coaching stints in the NFL were not too much to brag about. His record with the Jets (in 1994) after one season was 6-10. This earned him a pink slip. His next head coaching position was in New England where he had two bad playoff runs and failed to make the playoffs in his 3rd season. Kraft felt three tries was enough and fired the young and energetic coach. Carroll’s overall record as an NFL head coach was 33-31.
Certainly Carroll’s NFL resume didn’t stop the Trojans from hiring the unproven head coach. When at the helm, Carroll brought to USC 2 national championships and 7 Pac-10 championships. He certainly showed the world that he knows how to coach college football.
Perhaps if he signs with the Seahawks, and sources close to Carroll say he has made inquiries about the job, he will bring this winning swagger to a much depleted and aged Seahawks club.
Is this the end of an era for Carroll and USC?
