Now that Brian Kelly has settled in South Bend and learned his way around the Guglielmino Athletics Complex, he has a major offensive issue to sort out. With the early departure of QB Jimmy Clausen and an ACL tear to the heir apparent Dayne Crist, Kelly does not have a QB with any collegiate experience.
Unfortunately, the depth chart is not deep because Weis did not sign any top QB prospects in 2009. As of now, Kelly has only but a few undesirable options. His first option is to rely on sophomore WR John Goodman (who played QB in high school). If Goodman doesn’t work out, high school senior Tommy Rees (an early enrolee) or walk-on Brian Costello will see first string action. However, regardless of who is under center, all of these prospects are just that, prospects.
It is very clear that after a rough decade the Irish faithful have very little patience and with inexperience written all over the QB position, Kelly’s Indiana house might get egged worse than his Cincy home.
It’s not all that bad though, there is one glimmer of hope. Highly recruited 2010 prospect QB Andrew Hendrix has verbally committed to the Irish. However, this commitment was based on Weis being the coach, not Brian Kelly. If Kelly can convince him to stay, he might just have the QB he needs to run his high powered offense.
