What did we learn in Week 2.
First, I’m a big fan of nepotism, but there is a point when a coach has to pull his son out of the game. It is clear that Cody Hawkins is not a good QB and the Toledo defense exposed his lack of talent all night long. Even when down several scores in the 4th quarter, his dad kept him in the game. As a result, he may have suffered a concussion when he dove into the end-zone, head first, for a meaningless 4th quarter touchdown. I have some advice for you Coach Dan Hawkins, if you are down big, pull your QB (even if he is your son) as you have now hurt him more than his reputation already has.
A big round of applause goes to Tate Forcier. As a true freshman, he held his composure, made smart plays, and threw the ball with great accuracy against what Lou Holtz suggested was a national championship contender in Notre Dame. Forcier kept the Wolverines in the game and ended the day with a 5 yard TD pass to Greg Matthews with 11 seconds left in the game. The Wolverines won the most exciting football game of their storied rivalry 38-34. Great game and effort by both programs!
Oh Ohio State! The Matador is disappointed in the 18-15 outcome against Southern Cal. The Buckeyes lost because of poor execution in the redzone and conservative play calling by Jim Tressel. When Ohio State kicked the field goal on 4th down to make it 10-7 in the second quarter, I knew they were going to lose. OSU should have gone for it. Even if they were stopped, SC would have been pinned on the 1 yard line and at that point their offense was very anemic. Tressel’s play calling on offense was suspect and the defense failed to deliver in the 4th quarter letting Matt Barkley drive down the entire length of the field for the winning TD. Hats off to SC for pulling out a win.
The best news of the day though is Tulsa covered! I hope everyone made some money off of the pick.
