Dantonio‘s Spartans are ranked #3 in the Big Ten and the team is struggling to find a new face in the running game. Currently, there are six young backs running for the job. However, it looks like another back is in the mix as the school reinstated sophomore Glenn Winston.
As you recall, Winston was the RB who beat the snot out of a Michigan State hockey player, A.J. Sturges, who was hospitalized and is still recovering. This beating earned Winston six months in jail plus probation. He was also was indefinitely suspended from the football team after entering his guilty plea.
Now, Dantoni has cleared him to play just in time for preseason camp. It’s clear the school is not concerned about public perception and would just rather win. The question remains, if Winston wasn’t a star RB would he have been reinstated?
This isn’t a good move for the school or the program, but it does provide for an unexpected boost to the team.
In the words of Dantonio, “Glenn has done everything that he’s been asked to do, from a judicial and a team standpoint. He has paid the penalty for his actions – publicly, legally and athletically – and he worked hard to maintain his academic eligibility while doing so. We regret the entire incident; however, at this time, it is important that we support Glenn….athletically. He still has a lot of work to do.” By work, Dantonio means he needs to run and earn his scholarship.
Poor play Michigan State.
