Michigan State running back Glenn Winston, who’s current home is the Ingham County Jail, is schedule to be released on August 13th. Conveniently, his release is only 3 days after MSU’s first preseason practice (on August 10th).
He is currently serving a 180 day sentence for misdemeanor assault and battery convictions in connection with a fight last fall.
Winston got in to a fist fight with A.J. Sturges, a MSU hockey player, causing severe head injuries which required hospitalization and rehab. Sturges continues to experience headaches but hopes to return to the ice for the 2009-10 season.
Winston was used primarily on special teams last year and led the Spartans in kick return yards. MSU coach Mark Dantonio suspended Winston indefinitely as a result of his arrest and convicition but he has not ruled out Winston’s return to the team this fall. The Spartans will be looking for someone to step up and fill the void left by the departure of all everything back Javon Ringer.
In response to inquiries, Dantonio simply replied, Winston has “got work to do.”
It sounds like Winston will be in full pads upon release.
