Corporate America, or should I say Nike, has taken over the University of Pittsburgh athletic department. Yesterday, the Pitt Panthers unveiled their new Nike football uniforms that are akin to Georgia Tech’s.
There are three noticeable differences that traditional Pitt fans dislike. First, there is the addition of the Nike swoosh logo on the upper left shoulder. Second, Pitt is not written in its traditional script format; rather, Pitt is in small block letters above the player’s front number. Finally, the blue and mustard yellow color scheme is no longer.
To most fans and traditionalists, these new look uniforms are awful. But for Pitt and Nike, it’s a lucrative money deal that in the end will provide Pitt with the resources for better uniforms, equipment, and support for Pitt’s 19 collegiate teams.
Word from camp is, the players are happy to have Nike apparel over Adidas. Coach Dave Wannstedt thinks the uniforms look great. Wannstedt even remarked how potential high school athletes always ask if the team is affiliated with Nike.
It looks like Pitt Just Did It.
