10 protest against Penn State, 1,500 students rally in support

David Baran, a Penn State graduate, is so disgusted with his alma mater that he staged a rally on Tuesday on the steps of Old Main to protest the Jerry Sandusky scandal and to showcase his distaste about the way Penn State handled the sex abuse charges. Baran pulled out his diploma, then a lighter, and set his degree ablaze for everyone to see. The one problem, only 10 supporters showed up to his protest. Meanwhile, over 1,500 students...

Barry Switzer immortalized by Oklahoma

The University of Oklahoma commemorated former head coach Barry Switzer by unveiling a bronze statue of the legendary coach at the Switzer Center this past Saturday during a well received pre-game dedication ceremony. In attendance included Big12 commissioner Chuck Neinas, Bob Stoops, and former and current OU coaches and players. From 1973-1988, Switzer compiled an unprecedented 157-29-4 overall record and a  blustering 100-11-1 conference record winning more games than any other coach in school history. During that dominance, he...

Witt’s cross-Rhodes to greatness

Yale QB Patrick Witt is presented with an interesting dilemma regarding athletics vs. academics. On Nov. 19th, the Yale Bulldogs are set to play The Game against rival Harvard. Unfortunately, Yale’s top QB may not be able to suit up, at least in football gear. Witt was just selected as a Rhodes Scholarship finalist. Interviews, which are scheduled in his home state of Georgia, are on the same day as the Harvard game. Obviously, Witt cannot be in two...

Colorado’s move to the Pac-12 proves to be cataclysmic

Teams that are considering the conference switch should take a serious look at Colorado before making any move. Last season, Colorado announced it would leave the Big XII conference for the greener pastures of the newly configured Pac-12. Well the transition has been anything but smooth for the anemic Buffaloes. Colorado is an abysmal 1-8 with no conference wins in its inaugural Pac-12 season. The low point thus far was a 2-45 loss to Oregon in which after the...

Football players get a bump in pay

The NCAA approved an initiative that allows athletic conferences the option of giving full scholarship athletes a $2,000 annual stipend to help defray the high cost of college. The notion behind the move is to line the pockets of players who are in financial need and cannot obtain a part-time job due to the commitment involved when playing college sports. The $2,000 stipend would be in addition to the athlete’s full scholarship (which is currently limited to room, board,...
