15 funny college mascots of yesteryear

College mascots are meant to represent their school, often putting off a much-feared and intimidating appearance. But some mascots fall on the other end of the spectrum and tend to attract more ridicule than fear. Others are so amazingly offensive that we can’t help but chuckle about their mere existence. Whatever the case, these mascots have all been retired, for better or for worse. 1. Sherman College Unicorn The Sherman College Unicorn was chosen early in the college’s history,...

Michigan recruit targets Ohio State

The rivalry between “the team up north” and “that school down south” takes no breaks during the off-season. Michigan’s top recruit Ondre Pipkins, who’s letter of intent is still hot of the presses, truly understands the animosity between the two schools. In a radio interview on Ann Arbor’s WTKA, the 6-foot-3, 320-pound defensive tackle spoke his piece about Ohio State and its recruits. Pipkins matched up against Ohio State’s top offensive lineman recruit Kyle Dodson in last week’s Army...

NCAA president mulling two-round playoff

NCAA president Mark Emmert spoke at a Tallahassee civic organization luncheon yesterday reiterating his support for a two-round, four-team BCS championship playoff system. After Alabama blanketed LSU 21-0 in the BCS championship game, it only added more fuel to the playoff fire. Under Emmert’s final four scenario, LSU would have matched up against Stanford and Alabama would have played Oklahoma State. The winners would have advanced to the BCS championship game. Emmert did say he would not support a...

Florida’s Leon Orr accepts deferred prosecution agreement

Florida defensive tackle Leon Orr, who was charged with possession of marijuana earlier this month, agreed to a deferred prosecution agreement. Under the agreement, the reserve defensive tackle was fined $50 and will either have to serve 12.5 hours of community service or pay an additional $150 fine. Moreover, Orr must stay out of trouble for six months or he will face prosecution for failing to fulfill the requirements of the agreement. Orr’s penalties may not seem harsh, but...

The dark side of college football

Baseball may have been America’s national pastime once, but today football is king. No doubt attention spans are shorter, and the relaxed pace of a 9-inning ballgame isn’t for everyone. But the exodus of fans from the gentlemen’s game was certainly hastened by the Steroid Era. People who had loved baseball because of its purity and resistance to change felt betrayed by players who had shattered decades-old records by cheating. For many, college sports remain the only place to...

Penn State alumni magazine portrays the dark days to come

The Penn Stater, Penn State alumni’s award-winning bimonthly magazine, released its first issue in the aftermath of the alleged child sex-abuse scandal that rocked the university and the college football world. The dark ominous cover is symbolic of the bleakness that surrounds the university and the days to come. The cover portrays Penn State letters crashing to the bottom piled in disarray much like the university sits as it frantically works on restoring its once proud reputation. The emblematic...

Big 10 ends bowl season with much needed win

The Big 10 bowl season concluded last night after Michigan narrowly escaped Virginia Tech in the Allstate Sugar Bowl. The final bowl tally for the conference is 4-6. The record could have been a disappointing 2-8 had it not been for Michigan State’s heroic come-from-behind triple OT win against Georgia and some extremely poor coaching by Virginia Tech’s Frank Beamer in last night’s game. The Big 10 struggled overall with Wisconsin, Nebraska, Iowa, Penn State, Northwestern, and Ohio State...

Is anyone at the Independence Bowl?

Bowl games are not as profitable or as popular as one would think. Take a look at the attendance for today’s 2011 Advocare V100 Independence Bowl featuring two 7-5 teams in the Missouri Tigers and the North Carolina Tar Heels. As the picture clearly indicates, Independence Stadium is nowhere near the 49,147 capacity level. This is not a knock on Missouri or North Carolina or even on Shreveport, LA, it’s more of a commentary on the need to reduce...
