The Penn Stater captures the very essence of the state of the school

The Penn Stater, Penn State alumni’s award-winning bimonthly magazine, released its first issue in the aftermath of the alleged child sex-abuse scandal that rocked the university and the college football world. The dark ominous cover is symbolic of the bleakness that surrounds the university and the days to come. The cover portrays Penn State letters crashing to the bottom piled in disarray much like the university sits as it frantically works on restoring its once proud reputation.

The emblematic cover will certainly draw sharp criticism—with readers either loving it or hating it. One anonymous student commented that she “was shocked at the appearance”.

The cover is only the tip of the ice-berg for what’s to come as the reader turns each page. The January/February issue devotes over 40 pages to horrific stories and photographs regarding the fallout surrounding the Jerry Sandusky scandal. With the turning of each page, the articles rehash the nightmares the students and alumni faced on that unforgettable day when word first broke.

As the cover suggests, the dark days of Penn State are looming for days, if not years, to come.
