10 football programs that could benefit from conference realignment

The impending move of Texas A&M to the SEC ushers the captivating conference expansion saga into its second year. With the Pac 10 now the Pac 12, the Big 10 now a 12-team league and the Big 12 now a ten-team (soon to be nine-team) league, it’s blatantly obvious that further movement will eventually occur. Speculation about possible 14-or 16-team “super-conferences” has college football fans hoping their programs will benefit from the massive changes and not be left out...

Childish H.S. coach refuses to take the field after bad call

I’m not sure what to think of a high school coach’s reaction to a ref’s bad call, but to pull a team for such a trivial matter seems a bit absurd.  In the teams’ season opener, Seattle’s Garfield High refused to take the field because their coach disagreed with a blown call.  Garfield was trailing Lake Washington High 14-0 in the 3rd quarter when Garfield fumbled the ball and did not recover.  Upset with the ref failing to blow...

Fox Sports Pac-12 video demeans Asians?

September 7, 2011

The above video landed Fox Sports in some hot water. After airing a segment that mocked Asian students filmed on SC’s campus, Fox had no choice but to cancel The College Experiment. Last week’s segment was aimed to get students’ perspectives on Colorado and Utah entering the Pac-12 conference. The announcer was clearly targeting unsuspecting Asians who had no concept or cared whatsoever about college football. Rather than focusing on true college football fans, the “comedian” mocked the Asian...

College football’s 10 most promising newcomers for 2011

College football is an incredibly difficult game to master. With the speed, strength and complexity of the schemes, it’s unreasonable to expect a first-year player to make an immediate impact. But, when a freshman or JUCO transfer can productively fill a position of need, it can catapult his team to a different level. Before last season, few college football fans knew about Cam Newton — a year later, Auburn is the defending national champion and Carolina Panthers fans are...

Kansas State’s new mascot, EcoKat?

Everyone should do his or her part when it comes to protecting the environment, but eco- and football don’t really mix unless you are from Kansas State—so the school thought.  In a bold environmental initiative, Kansas State unofficially introduced its new female mascot, EcoKat, the “crusader of conservation and fanatic of fluorescents.” Within minutes of the tree-hugger themed mascot going viral, disgruntled K-State fans hit the internet proclaiming their “dislike” of  the eco-friendly mascot.  Among recent tweets: “#EcoKat makes...

The 10 Worst Heisman Trophy Winners of All Time

Trying to choose the worst Heisman winner is like trying to choose the ugliest Miss America winner — they’re all great, and highlighting their flaws is just being nitpicky. Nevertheless, for the sake of argument, you have to acknowledge that some winners are less deserving than others, whether it’s because they won merely on reputation, and/or because there were more deserving candidates. The following Heisman Trophy recipients were all super talented, but their resumes were a bit underwhelming. 1....

15 Teams With the Most Unruly Fans

Sports are nothing without the fans. Dick Young, one of America’s pioneering sportswriters of the 20th century, said it best: “Fans are the only ones who really care. There are no free-agent fans.” Of course, some fans care more than others, which is why you’ll never see the Florida Marlins, for example, mentioned among the teams with the most ardent support in baseball. These American (and one Canadian, or Canadien) teams — college and pro — have the...
