Everyone should do his or her part when it comes to protecting the environment, but eco- and football don’t really mix unless you are from Kansas State—so the school thought. In a bold environmental initiative, Kansas State unofficially introduced its new female mascot, EcoKat, the “crusader of conservation and fanatic of fluorescents.”
Within minutes of the tree-hugger themed mascot going viral, disgruntled K-State fans hit the internet proclaiming their “dislike” of the eco-friendly mascot. Among recent tweets: “#EcoKat makes me want to leave my porch light on 24hours and drive two blocks to the gas station for a pack of gum,” “EcoKat: The worst idea since the Power Towel” and from a University of Kansas fan “MY GOD. What is #kstate thinking?”
EcoKat, in her purple mask, cape, teased orange hair, and a costume made of 90 percent repurposed material, will be an awkward addition to the already popular Willie the Wildcat come football Saturday. K-State acknowledged that EcoKat was not the school’s official mascot, but rather, an environmental student trying to send a message.
University president Kirk Schulz addressed the issue basically benching EcoKat, but not completely scratching the idea.
Kansas State opens the season this Saturday against the Eastern Kentucky Colonels at 7:00 pm. There is still no word on whether or not EcoKat will be freed to the general public.
