Hawkeyes and Cornhuskers introduce “The Heroes Game”

Iowa and Nebraska announce annual Heroes Game.

The B1G continues to disappoint when it comes to marketing and gimmicks.  This time the thanks goes to Iowa and Nebraska, who decided to dub their newly created rivalry game “The Heroes Game.”

The notion behind this game is to honor one hero from each respective state prior to the annual match-up.  Friends, neighbors, co-workers, or pretty much anyone who has a voice will nominate each hero from each state.  Aside from pre-game and on-filed recognition, the school will memorialize each hero by having their name and hometown etched on to the newly, yet unfinished, Heroes Game trophy.

So move over Little Brown Jug or Paul Bunyan’s Axe, the Heroes trophy is a new trophy concept to award those not related to either football or the program.  The rationale behind honoring heroes is completely understandable, but the correlation behind heroes and rivalry games is a bit far removed.
