QB Jacory Harris is ready to lead the charge for Coach Shannon and the Miami Hurricanes. Unfortunately, if Harris goes down, the Hurricanes will dwindle down to a light shower simply because they only have one back-up QB.
In a surprise move, slated back-up QBs Taylor Cook and Cannon Smith both transferred from the program earlier this week. This leaves only one back-up QB in Coral Gables.
On Cook’s transfer, “I’m just going back home [Eagle Lake, Texas] to play some football. If I go to a Division I-AA school, I can play right away. If I go to another Division I-A school, I have to sit out another two semesters. “Yes, I got my release. I made a decision and I’m sticking with it.”
Smith, who hails from Memphis, said he is returning back home to Memphis and will decide his football playing career on a later date. Since Smith, the son of FedEx chairman Fred Smith and one of the richest and most powerful businessmen in the world, was born with a silver-spoon, he doesn’t really have to make any decisions right away.
The only remaining viable QB after Harris is true freshman A.J. Highsmith. Highsmith is a solid recruit, but he is nowhere near ready to take snaps under center. After Highsmith, God only knows who is left on the depth chart.
This is a serious blow to the Hurricanes as they wanted to show the ACC and the rest of the college football world that they are for real. The ‘Canes will certainly have the opportunity to do so as they open the season against 4 top 25 teams– at Florida State (Sept. 7), Georgia Tech (Sept. 17), at Virginia Tech (Sept.26), and Oklahoma (Oct.3).
