With BYU turning to independent status next season, which makes no sense, the university just confirmed its lack of commitment to football, or at least fielding a competitive football team. The school announced its post-season tie in bowl will be the Fight Hunger Bowl come 2013. That’s right, I had to look it up myself. Apparently the Fight Hunger Bowl committee dropped the WAC and secured BYU. If by some small miracle BYU ever gets a BCS bid, the Fight Hunger Bowl will get to select a WAC team as a replacement.
With college football becoming more and more of a business, schools want to grab a piece of that pie. BYU is making a safe bet by confirming a post-season home. Even with six wins, you are not guaranteed a bowl, just ask an 8 win Temple Owls program.
I get BYU is protecting its pecuniary interest, but the Fight Hunger Bowl, which may have a great cause, just doesn’t scream tradition, spirit, or honor. Not a good move in my book.
