Two seasons too late: Dan Hawkins fired

After five miserable seasons, Colorado finally cuts ties with coach Dan Hawkins

The entire state of Colorado is reporting that Dan Hawkins will be relieved of his coaching duties later today. Hawkins sealed his fate last Saturday after he blew a 45-17 fourth quarter lead to Kansas with twelve minutes remaining in the game (lost 52-45).

Hawkins arrived in Boulder with great expectations after much success as the Broncos head coach going 53-11 during his tenure. Colorado Nation quickly fell for “Hawk Love,” but soon learned that his hype was not real after Hawkins opened his coaching tenure with a 19-10 loss to FCS Montana State. It’s no surprise Hawkins was ultimately fired as he led Colorado into the world of mediocrity. In five seasons he amassed a disappointing 19-39 overall record with a miniscule 10 conference wins.

As it stands, the school, fans, and most importantly, boosters, had enough and decided that it’s time to cut bait, pay him is $1.8 million buyout, promote associate coach Cabral as interim head coach, and begin the quest for a new leader of the heard. The program anxiously looks to change its image and looks forward to start anew in the expanded PAC 12 conference come 2011.

The questions remains, who will restore the pride in Boulder? Perhaps former Colorado coach Bill McCartney can answer that question.

Hawkins record while at Colorado (2006-2010)

2006: 2-10, 2-6
2007: 6-7, 4-4
2008: 5-7, 2-6
2009: 3-9, 2-6
2010: 3-6, 0-5
