Hokies win is a loss for WR Roberts

Virginia Tech's Dyrell Roberts will miss the remainder of the season.

Virginia Tech won a crucial ACC game Thursday night against Georgia Tech 28-21, but lost a big part of their offense and special teams. WR/KR Dyrell Roberts will miss the remainder of the season after suffering, what was initially thought to me minor, a bruised left leg during the first quarter of the game. Roberts tried to return to the field, but did not see any action in the second half.

After the victory, Roberts developed excruciating pain in his left thigh and the injury turned out to be more serious in nature than just a bruise. The pain was so severe that on Friday morning he underwent emergency surgery because of compartment syndrome–a serious blood flow condition that can cause permanent injury or even death. Robert’s first surgery was successful and he is expected to have his second surgery today at Montgomery Regional Hospital in Blacksburg, Virginia.

Tech’s athletic trainer, Mike Goforth, confirmed Roberts will miss the remainder of the season, but with the possibility of returning come post-season play. Tech is still vying for the ACC championship game with hopes of playing in the Orange Bowl on January 3, 2011.

If Tech can land a BCS bowl bid and Roberts returns to action, the Hokies will be on such an emotional high they will be extremely difficult to beat. This season, Roberts hauled in 21 catches for 303 yards and 2 TDs. He is also averaging 19.4 yards/kickoff return.
