Dan Spitz (#92) is ruled ineligible for the first 9 games of the 2010 season

Because Washington State football woes cannot seem to catch a break, it’s only fitting that defensive lineman Dan Spitz has been ruled ineligible for the first 9 games of the 2010 season. Spitz, a redshirt sophomore, must ride the pine after the NCAA determined he violated the banned substance abuse policy.

Though the NCAA will not disclose the results of the test, use of stimulants, steroids, or other diuretics may trigger a positive result. Players are encouraged to consult the team doctor and nutritionist before any substance is ingested. As a result of the positive findings, the NCAA will allow Spitz to practice with the team, but he cannot see the field until November 6th when Washington State hosts California.

Coach Paul Wulff was disappointed in hearing of the news but conceded that the school takes substance abuse very seriously and hopes Spitz and his teammates learn from this lesson. In the meantime, Wulff, who is 3-22 as WSU’s head coach, must see some wins in 2010 or he will be banned from the Cougars for life.
