Rumors are swirling that UNC’s star defensive tackle Marvin Austin will be suspended his entire senior year due to NCAA violations to include receiving and accepting extra benefits from a sports agent. The NCAA has not confirmed or denied this rumor, but it’s becoming clear that the next time you see Austin, it will be in a professional uniform. There is speculation that Austin is not the only player to be suspended.
Austin’s troubles stemmed after the NCAA was investigating Austin with respect to the car he drove, cash and gifts, multiple trips to Miami, and multiple trips to his hometown, Washington D.C. The NCAA is investigating how all this was paid for and who picked up the tab. Austin denies any wrongdoing and has cooperated fully with the NCAA by providing bank statements and financial records. He was also interviewed at length. If caught lying, Austin’s eligibility will be revoked and his college football career will be over with (see Dez Bryant).
