Disgraced former Georgia athletic director Damon Evans leaves behind what could have been a lasting legacy in Athens, GA. Evans was arrested last Wednesday in Atlanta and charged with DUI after police observed Evans’ BMW swerving from lane to lane. Upon pulling Evans over, police noticed a female passenger (Courtney Fuhrmann) whose red lacy underwear was sitting in Evans’ lap. The two were arrested and booked in an Atlanta jail, Fuhrmann was nailed for disorderly conduct. Evans resigned from his post this past Monday leaving the school searching to find his replacement.
Questions about Courtney Furhmann’s relationship with Evans are abuzz in Athens as Evans is married with two children. While he contends the two are just good friends, the Victoria’s Secret garment on his lap strongly refutes his claim. One can’t help but think that the possible infidelity of Evans is what ultimately led to his resignation. While DUI charges are serious in nature, they are far too common and Evans would have probably kept his job if the DUI was the only thing. However, people don’t take too kindly to having the face of their athletic program being caught up in affairs while the wife and mother of his children are left at home. One need not look further than the Tiger Woods soap opera and the public perception of him after his skeletons fell out of the closet.
Evans has no one to blame but himself concerning his recent unemployment. Hired in 2004, at the young age of 34, Evans became the Southeastern Conference’s youngest and first black athletic director. He had the chance to etch his signature in conference history and make a lasting impression for his legacy. Unfortunately, he chose the wrong path and will have to live with the consequences as a result. Evans should have taken his own advice that he gave UGA fans via video before every home football game, “If you drink and drive, you lose.”
