Orlando's Citrus Bowl is getting Astroturf

The Florida Citrus Bowl is getting a new look. The Orlando City council voted yesterday to approve dealings with AstroTurf that will bid farewell to grass and hola to turf. While the move is not yet final, all signs point to this measure being approved and turf being installed at the Orlando staple before the 2010 Champs Sports Bowl.

This news shouldn’t come as a shock to anyone after watching last year’s Captial One Bowl game between LSU and Penn State. It’s still a mystery how none of the game’s participants suffered torn ACLs from the horrible field conditions as a result of numerous rainstorms that hit the region before the bowl game.

The Florida Citrus Bowl was built in 1936 as Orlando Stadium, and underwent four name changes before the current name was decided upon in 1983. The stadium has hosted numerous events such as the 1994 World Cup, and soccer matches during the 1996 Olympic games in Atlanta, GA. Welcome to the 21st century Citrus Bowl, glad you can make it.
