The Nebraska faithful have reason to worry as their top receiver can’t seem to stay out of trouble. This past weekend, senior WR Niles Paul was picked up for possession of alcohol by a minor and urinating in public in downtown Lincoln, Nebraska. Some time around 1:23 a.m. on Friday morning a police officer spotted Paul, who reeked of alcohol, urinating on a fence near Centennial Mall. The officer tested Paul who blew a .104. He was immediately arrested, but later released.
Coach Bo Pelini was informed of Paul’s run-in with the law and expressed that the team will handle the matter internally. This is Paul’s second alcohol related incident in less than 2 years. In April 2009, Paul was arrested for a DUI. In his plea agreement, he pled guilty to reckless driving and being a minor in possession of alcohol. As a result of his plea, Paul was suspended during the 2009 spring practice.
Last season, Paul was Nebraska’s leading receiver nabbing 40 passes for 796 yards and 4 TDs. He was also named the offensive MVP in the Holiday Bowl. Paul should be the go-to receiver in 2010 if he can stay out of trouble. The team is very thin at WR and will certainly need the leadership and service of Niles Paul if Pelini intends to make a run for the Big 12 crown.
