Georgia’s Richt unfairly feeling the increased pressure

Georgia's Mark Richt should not be on the hot seat

The calls for Georgia head coach Mark Richt’s head are growing louder and louder with each passing day. UGA fans from all over the state are becoming increasingly frustrated with their front man, and the news of UGA’s QB Logan Gray’s potential transfer doesn’t bode well for Richt’s job security. In today’s instant gratification society, sports fans want to win, and win NOW. However, Georgia firing Richt would be one of the worst mistakes the school’s athletic department could make.

Richt was hired by Georgia as their 25th football coach in 2001 and is the Southeastern Conference’s longest tenured head coach. He’s compiled a very respectable 90-27 record and an even more impressive 7-2 bowl record. His Bulldogs have won 2 SEC titles and have gone 2-1 in BCS bowl games. In addition to being a great coach, Richt  is a man of impeccable character.

Richt’s wife Katharyn successfully battled cervical cancer in 2006, an issue that weighed heavily on the Richt family. The two are also the parents to two adopted Ukrainian children. Richt is a devout Christian that not only talks the talk, but walks the walk. He and his family are pillars in the Athens community and have established themselves outside of football.

Love him or hate him, Richt is good for the University of Georgia and the Athens, GA community. Even though the past few seasons have been tough for Richt, team injuries and departures to the NFL draft have contributed significantly to those struggles. Stick with Richt, Georgia. The dividends will be plentiful.
