Caged Cougar freed

BYU’s all-time leading rusher sticks out his tongue to the administration and voluntarily withdraws from BYU to enjoy life and to have fun.

Was it alcohol, fornication, or both, who knows? In a surprising announcement yesterday, BYU’s leading rusher, Harvey Unga, is said to be withdrawing from the university for violating the school’s honor code. Coincidentally, Unga’s girlfriend and BYU basketball player, Keilani Moeaki, is also voluntarily withdrawing from the university for the same reason.

The school’s honor code is very strict when it comes to alcohol, tobacco and premarital sex and any violation could result in strict sanctions. The two athletes may have avoided embarrassment by withdrawing from the university before the school board could get involved with investigating potential infractions.

There is no word yet if either of the two will seek readmission. If they decide to, they will have to convince the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to forgive them for their sins. The two Cougars were actually engaged to be married a year ago but they called off their wedding. To date, however, they are still dating and more than likely still violating BYU’s honor code.

There is a silver lining in that not all is lost for BYU’s all-time leading rusher. Unga may have missed the NFL draft deadline, but he will be eligible to enter the NFL supplementary draft in mid-July. The 6’0 237 pound RB does have the talent and skills to find a roster spot on an NFL team.

If he doesn’t want to play on Sundays, he could transfer to a D-II school where he would not have to sit out for a season and would be a virtual lock to start. Worst case scenario, he can roll the dice and request to be reinstated back to BYU. He has three options, and none of them are bad, but all signs are pointing to the supplemental draft. As for Moeaki, perhaps the WNBA is looking for another sharp shooter.
