Not that UVA was going to contend for an ACC championship this season, but new head coach Mike London must be scratching his head wondering what he is going to do with his lack of experienced signal callers. As it stands, Sophomore Riko Smalls, who was going to contend against Senior Marc Verica for the starting spot, turned in his playbook and packed his bags. Smalls announced today that he was going to transfer from UVA and continue his college career elsewhere.
Apparently, Smalls did not see eye to eye with the new head coach and decided it would be best to depart the team. This difference of opinion was evident during the off-season and even more visual when Smalls failed to suit-up for spring practice which began on March 15th.
With Smalls off the team, there is no real competition for Verica as he is the only QB on the roster with any collegiate experience. UVA did sign four true QBs with additional recruits who could also play QB, but none have ever played a collegiate down.
Under the circumstances, London is a great coach and will be able to win some games regardless of who is under center, but it will take a few seasons for UVA to seriously compete for an ACC title. Unfortunately, the CavMan is running out of patience as the Cavaliers’ last ACC title was back in 1995 when Bill Clinton was in office.
