Russell Shepard moves to wideout

Russell Shepard will be moving from quarterback to receiver for the LSU Tigers this upcoming football season. Shepard, a true sophomore, will be playing the slot role in a move that is expected to allow him more touches and playing time. This news comes as a bit of a  surprise as Shepard was the #1 ranked QB coming out of high school in 2009, and was one of LSU’s most heralded recruits in recent years.  Shepard enrolled early at LSU last spring and was expected to challenge sophomore Jordan Jefferson for the starting QB job. However, Jefferson won the QB competition and started every game for the Tigers last season.

While Shepard never started a game at QB for the Tigers last season, he was still used in different roles on the offensive side of the ball. Head coach Les Miles utilized Shepard’s athleticism on the field by lining him up at running back, wide receiver, and quarterback throughout the season.

The move to WR makes sense as Shepard’s a dynamic threat any time he’s on the field. Look for the Tigers to use him a lot in the wildcat formation and out of the backfield as a RB as well.
