Scott took a hit, but he’s still standing

Austin Scott (#33) may have fumbled his shot at an NFL career, but millions may come his way pending his civil rights suit.

Former Penn State RB Austin Scott’s dream of making millions took a small hit this week. Judge James F. McClure, Jr. dismissed three defendants from his civil rights suit, former Centre County District Attorney Michael Madeira, former assistant Lance Marshall, and Centre County, Pennsylvania.

Scott’s civil rights suit arises from criminal charges filed against him in October 2007 for inter alia rape. The criminal case was ultimately dropped for lack of evidence, but the filing of that suit did negatively impact Scott and his playing career. Scott was slated to be a third or fourth round draft pick in the 2008 NFL draft and anticipated making millions. Since the filing of the criminal suit, he has been dealing with mental pain and suffering as he never got his chance to finish his Penn State career or play professional football.

In October 2009, he filed a civil rights suit against multiple defendants for his false arrest and the effect it had on his NFL future. With the dismissal of Madeira, Marshall, and Centre County, there still remains 9 defendants (primarily individuals from Penn State police and Penn State) and John/Jane Does 1-10 who will be financially responsible if there is a verdict in favor of Scott.

Since this case was recently filed, there is no trial date scheduled, but The Matador will keep you updated on the progress of the suit.
