In the wake of what would have been a nasty investigation of alleged physical and verbal abuse of his players, Kansas football coach Mark Mangino officially resigned today ending his eight year tenure as head coach.
Mangino proclaims his innocence and insists he has done nothing outside the scope of his coaching duties. Whatever the case, Mangino and Kansas reached an amicable settlement (around the neighborhood of $6 million) to compensate for Mangino’s early departure.
Mangino took over as head coach back in 2002 and as recent as 2007 he lead the Jayhawks to a 12-1 season including a BCS victory over Virginia Tech. Overall, Mangino was 50-58 but after starting 5-0 this season, he lost the final seven games finishing 5-7 and ineligible for a bowl.
