At least two coaches fell victim this Black Sunday. UVA’s Al Groh parted ways with the Cavaliers and Marshall’s Mark Snyder, who resigned, will forever be a Herd but just not the head coach.
Groh’s firing shouldn’t come to any surprise. His job has been in jeopardy since the season kicked-off. The team suffered an embarrassing 3-9 record in 2009 and lost 8 of their last nine games. The team hit an all time low when it lost to in-state rival William & Mary 26-14.
During his tenure, he did gain some recognition as Groh was ACC Coach of the Year in 2002 and 2007. He brought home 3 bowl victories. However, all this was for naught. The alumni and fans were not pleased with his overall 59-53 record. But Groh does take something away from all this–$4.33 million dollars as part of his buyout package.
As for Mark Snyder, well he wasn’t as successful as the Herd boasted a horrific 22-37 record. The AD’s patience wore thin and could not justify keeping the former Herd on the school’s payroll even though the team finished 6-6 in 2009. Synder resigned his position, but would have been fired if he refused to do so.
In related news, though it has not been confirmed, rumor has it that Weis’ assistants are slowly reaching out to the NFL for possible jobs on the assumption they will all be fired in the next few weeks.
