It’s going to be awfully quite at the Hawkins house this Thanksgiving season. Apparently after Dan Hawkins continues his unsuccessful run as a head coach, he’s decided to indirectly blame his son for the Buffs’ woes and their 3-8 season
In a nutshell, Hawkins spoke out to the media saying he regretted bringing his son Cody Hawkins into the program because it just didn’t work out. If he had to do it again, coach said he wouldn’t have recruited the young Hawkins who has thrown more INTs than TDs this season.
Now his son did have some success as a Buff, but I wouldn’t get too excited because his 49 TD passes (a school record) is attributed to the fact that father Hawkins just would not bench Cody regardless of how bad he was playing, thus he was getting TD passes when opposing teams were running a prevent defense with second and third string players on the field.
Ultimately after pressure from the AD and boosters, Hawkins benched his son midway through the season for sophomore Tyler Hansen.
If we learned anything from coach Hawkins, DO NOT RECRUIT YOUR SON no matter how good you think he is. Our heart goes out to Cody, he never asked for this, and I am positive he was just following his father’s orders.
