Ernie Davis in New York City with the Heisman Memorial Trophy

In 1961, Ernest “Ernie” Davis became the first African-American to win the Heisman Memorial Trophy. 48 years later, Syracuse finally decides to honor Davis by naming the Carrier Dome’s field the “Ernie Davis Legends Field.” A dedication ceremony will take place during the halftime show of the West Virginia game on October 10th.

Although Davis never played in the Carrier Dome (because it wasn’t opened until 1979), the school wants fans and players to always remember one of the greatest players to ever wear the Orange. For you ‘Cuse fans, Davis actually made history playing on Archbold Stadium field which was home for the Orange from 1907-1978.
