An official from an upstate New York cemetery reported last week that someone stole a football from the grave of Ernie Davis, the first black player to win the Heisman Trophy.  The cemetery is now reporting that the football was recovered over the weekend about 50 yards from Davis’ grave. In 1961, Ernest “Ernie” Davis became the first African-American to win the Heisman Memorial Trophy. 48 years later, Syracuse finally decides to honor Davis by naming the Carrier Dome’s field the “Ernie Davis Legends Field.” A dedication ceremony will take place during the halftime show of the West Virginia game on October 10th.
