USC’s Stafon Johnson is out of surgery and is expected to make a full recovery. The RB underwent a 7 hour surgery procedure last night to repair a crushed neck and larynx sustained when 275lbs. of weight landed on his throat while bench pressing yesterday. Paramedics gave Johnson a tracheotomy that helped him breathe.
Dr. Gudata Hinika, trauma medical director at California Hospital Medical Center, said that someone smaller would more than likely have died from the injury, and that he credits Johnson’s physical stature and body mass in his neck with saving his life.
As of now, Johnson is on a ventilator and is being tube fed through his stomach. The good news is that Johnson is on the road to recovery and is expected to pull through all of this. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.
