The Matador just learned that the Big Ten conference is suspending Michigan’s Jonas Mouton for the punch that never occurred. Mouton allegedly punched the chin of lineman Eric Olson after the end of a play during the second quarter of the Michigan/Notre Dame game.
The punishment, which is completely unwarranted, is for one game. Fortunately, this suspension will not really hurt the Wolverines as they face the perennial powerhouse Eastern Michigan Eagles this Saturday. This tells me that the NCAA really didn’t want to punish Mouton, but there was pressure from Charlie Weis and the media to respond to the media blitz of the punch in the wake of the Blount incident.
Regardless of the punishment, I’m sure it doesn’t take away any pain from the Notre Dame fans who saw the Wolverines come back from behind and win 38-34 in Ann Arbor. Perhaps a more acceptable punishment is to suspend Charlie Weis from fried foods for one week as a result of his questionable play calling that cost Notre Dame the game.
