Doug Marrone is facing a daunting challenge as head coach of Syracuse. It appears his challenge just got a little harder. This past week, JUCO transfer Derek Hines unexpectedly packed up his bags and left the program after four practices. The school did not release why he left, but some say he misses his hometown of Orange, California which doesn’t compare to the likes of downtown Syracuse.
Hines was a projected starter at weakside linebacker. This presents problems, as defensive coordinator Scott Shafer runs a 4-3 defense and is already thin at the LB position. Syracuse is now down to seven linebackers and most are not experienced.
To fill the void, there is talk about players switching positions, such as DE Brandon Sharpe moving back to LB. Marrone is not a fan of this, but after a few weeks of practice, he may have no choice. ‘Cuse fans, don’t be surprised if you see some true freshman on the field as a result of Hines’ departure and lack of depth at LB.
