The Big East wants $5,000,000 from TCU, files suit.

The conference shuffle continues to get messy with the Big East suing Texas Christian University (TCU) seeking $5,000,000 for breach of contract.  On November 29, 2010, TCU agreed to leave the Mountain West Conference for the Big East.  This move was to take place before the 2012 football season.  In the contract, TCU agreed that if it failed to join the Big East by July 1, 2012 it would pay the conference $5,000,000.

TCU never joined the conference.  On October 11, 2011, TCU informed the Big East that it was going to renege on joining the Big East so the school could join the Big 12.  In a press conference, TCU’s athletic director, Chris Del Conte, publicly acknowledged the school had a contractual obligation with the Big East, but to date, has refused to pay any exit fee.

The six page complaint was filed this past Monday in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. The Big East is represented by Benjamin Block of Covington & Burling LLP.
