Maryland fans went from elation, with the signing of five-star recruit Stefon Diggs, to dejection, with QB Danny O’Brien and two other players announcing their intentions of transferring from the program. The 2010 ACC Rookie of the Year announced on Monday that he would not be returning to the team. His departure is a significant loss to the already short-handed Terps. The Terps, coming off a two-win season, will now have only one experienced QB under center. QB C.J. Brown will be the new signal caller. The dual-threat quarterback does have limited experience as he saw action midway through the 2011 season when he split time with O’Brien.
Coach Randy Edsall remarked that he was “disappointed by Danny’s decision.” “Danny told me that he’s not committed to our program, that he’s not ‘all in.’ I want what’s best for all of our players. Danny wants a fresh start elsewhere. I wish him well.”
O’Brien has two years of eligibility remaining. Teams are already lining up in this “free agent” market to sign the heralded quarterback. Incidentally, O’Brien is not 100% as he is recovering from a broken bone injury to his non-throwing arm suffered back in a Nov. 12 loss to Notre Dame at FedEx field.
In addition to O’Brien packing his bags, offensive lineman Max Garcia and linebacker Mario Rowson are also heading home. As it stands, since Edsall took over in January 2011, 24 players have left the team, 12 with eligibility.
