QB Tyler Bray (#8) breaks thumb during Saturday's loss to Georgia

Tennessee’s bowl hopes (3-2) took a hit this weekend after QB Tyler Bray suffered a broken right thumb in Saturday’s loss to SEC rival Georgia 20-12. Bray broke his thumb late in the fourth quarter when his hand hit a defender’s helmet during a throw. Bray’s injury will sideline the gunslinger for at least six-weeks creating a void at the quarterback position.

The Volunteers, who have yet to win a conference game, will miss Bray’s stellar services as he was having a strong sophomore campaign amassing 1,579 yards and 14 TDS with only 2 INTS. Team doctors suspect Bray will be out for the remainder of the regular season with the slim possibility of returning prior to the team’s season finale against Kentucky.

In Bray’s place is senior QB Matt Simms who according to coach Derek Dooley is “battle tested. He’s been out there.” Whether or not Simms is ready to lead the Vols is debatable and fans will learn soon enough as Tennessee hosts No. 1 LSU this weekend and then travels the following weekend to Tuscaloosa to face No. 2 Alabama.
