Coach Neuheisel will be down at least two freshman linebackers come preseason ball this August. Long Beach’s Jordan High recruit OLB Taniela Maka (Fr. 6’1, 217 lbs) will not enroll with the school because of academic reasons. He was quoted as saying, “I just need to get a better SAT score.” He will continue to be involved with the team as much as possible and will officially enroll in 2010.

Jared Koster (Fr. 6’1. 220 lbs.), a DE at Norco Senior High, will miss the season with a sports hernia injury that will require surgery.

Not to worry UCLA fans, the LB corp is the strength of this defense with Kyle Bosworth, Reggie Carter, and Akeem Ayers leading the way. The younger LBs will have plenty of time to develop under this magnificent trio of LBs.

On UCLA football, Neuheisel states, “I think we’re a much more athletic team, stronger, but really inexperienced,” Neuheisel said. “We feel like we’re on the right path. The culture of work and the enthusiasm is where it needs to be.” As far as recruiting, Neuheisel said it is by design the Bruins don’t have a gaggle of commits. “Early commits are a formula for trouble,” he said. “They (can) end up not being the very best you can get.”
