Mountain West Denied Automatic BCS Bid

For the Mountain West faithful, the dream of attaining automatic qualifying (AQ) status for the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) has ended.  On Tuesday, the BCS Presidential Oversight Committee denied the conference’s request for a waiver that would have given the Mountain West an automatic bid for post-season play in the lucrative BCS for the 2012 and 2013 seasons. Though it was considered a long shot for the conference to attain AQ status, it was a disappointment considering the recent...

The Mountain West looks for a new image, goes boxy

Earlier today, the Mountain West Conference released a new logo and theme. Unfortunately, the logo and theme are about as unimaginative as the Conference’s new tagline “This is our Time” and nickname “The Rock.” The release, which was supposed to mark a new era for a Conference that has only been around for 13-years, is somewhat of a disappointment. The “This is or Time” tagline doesn’t really mean anything when the conference just lost BYU and Utah this year,...

SMU vandalized by TCU

An apparent TCU fan, with no artistic ability, decided to deface SMU’s Ford Stadium by spray painting “TCU” and “TCU Frogs” all throughout the stadium. Doors, ice machines, pavement, and even a golf cart fell victim to an orange color spray paint. The tagging began at the visitors entrance and ended at Loyd All-Sports Center. Official reports noted that at least 15-16 TCU related messages were found in-and-around the stadium. The school is in the process of power washing...

TCU declines rematch against Wisconsin

After a thrilling Rose Bowl victory over Wisconsin, TCU wanted no part of a possible rematch come 2011. This week, Wisconsin’s Bret Bielema stated in a radio show interview on The Big 1070 that shortly after the Rose Bowl he was approached by a third party about playing TCU in their season opener. Bielema could not say “yes” fast enough. However, TCU head coach Gary Patterson did not seem as excited and turned down the invitation. Despite TCU needing to fill...

Is Kirk Ferentz the most overrated coach in college football? Pt. 2

The first part of this Iowa news series received such a warm reception by Hawkeye Nation, hopefully part two promises more of the same. Apparently, Hawkeye football in Iowa is more popular than corn subsidies. Iowans from Sioux City to Waterloo either left comments or shot-off emails, sticking up for their head coach, with some using a few choice words to do so.  Nonetheless, I would not expect any different from any true college football fan in coming to the aid and defense of their...

TCU’s Dalton is new cover boy

Phil Steele is arguably the most obsessive college football fan ever. Each summer, thousands of college football fans anxiously await for Steele’s College Football Preview magazine. Much to the delight of TCU fans, their heralded QB Andy Dalton will grace the cover of the Texas issue (Steele issues regional and national covers). Make room at the table for the Mountain West Conference

The Bowl Championship Series (BCS) meetings are taking place in Phoenix, Arizona, this week. While all the media talk has been about the potential expansion of the Big Ten and Southeastern conferences, the Mountain West Conference could end up as the biggest winner if the the BCS powers that be have their way. BCS executive director Bill Hancock mentioned during meetings on Wednesday the possibility of Mountain West becoming the seventh conference to receive the coveted BCS automatic berth for the 2012 and...
