Big rumors are swirling in Iowa City. There is chatter that the Hawkeyes’ star RB Jewel Hampton is contemplating red-shirting the 2009 season. Earlier in the summer, Hampton went down with a right knee strain which was subsequently injured during the preseason a few weeks ago. How serious is Hampton’s knee injury?

Iowa’s RB Jewel Hampton was slated to fill the shoes of NFL bound Shonn Greene. However, there is still uncertainty regarding his knee. Hampton has not been practicing with the team and coach Ferentz stated he is going to stay off his leg for “a little bit.” During Kids Day at Kinnick stadium this past Saturday, Hampton was wearing a sleeve on his right knee and appeared to be in good spirits, but not moving well. The Doak Walker Award watch list was just released this afternoon. It is even more absurd than the O’Brien award as 45 running backs are featured on this list. Again, there seems to be a lack of prestige and/or seriousness to be on the watch list when pretty much any back with two feet gets named. The Doak is named after SMU and Detroit Lions football player Doak Walker. It was first awarded in 1990 to Washington’s Greg Lewis....
