Bullet Bill will always be remembered

The Matador would like to pay special tribute to Virginia great “Bullet Bill” Dudley who sadly passed away today in a Lynchburg hospital. Dudley was a legend on the gridiron and was arguably the greatest player to ever wear the orange and blue. He was a record setting Cavalier finishing 5th in the 1941 Heisman race. That season, he was a consensus All-American scoring 18 TDs, 23 PATs, and 1 FG. He was the first Cavalier to have his number...

Zook’s Champaign is running dry

Ron Zook is known for his ability to recruit the nation’s top talent such as Juice Williams and Arrelious Benn. However, his demise, as fans will proclaim, has always been his coaching and play calling. Well it looks like his recruiting finally caught up to his coaching. This year, the Ilini finished the recruiting season with one of its worst classes ever. Rivals.com ranked the class at 70 while Scout.com had them a bit higher at 60. Even so, it was a...

For the Glory

Well it looks like signing day has come and gone. Aside from a few holdouts such as Seantrel Henderson (who is holding out on USC until the NCAA concludes its investigation), most teams have their recruiting class all lined up. Depending on which rating scale you prefer, the top ten schools should come to no surprise–Florida, Texas, Alabama, Oklahoma and USC all had strong showings and late moves. Penn State, Auburn and Washington also picked up some highly talented...

Worthless Texas merchandise goes to Haiti

Regardless of how altruistic you deem George Mitchell to be, he has agreed to donate 14,000 shirts and hats to earthquake ravaged Haiti. Mr. Mitchell is the University Co-op president who, on a gamble, printed shirts and hats bearing the Texas Longhorns as the BCS National Champions. Of course, when Colt McCoy went down, so did Mitchell’s profits and dreams. In an effort to salvage his loss, he got in touch with Kids In Distressed Situations, Inc. to coordinate...

Pitt to the Big 10?

Rumors are swirling in the virtual world that Pitt is joining the Big 10 conference. Some have doubts about the rumors, while others, including Ben Maller, see it happening. Maller reports: University of Pittsburgh athletics are moving to the Big 10 conference, according to sources close to the school. Some athletes were informed of the move over the weekend, a little birdie tells me. This move sets up the natural rivalry with Penn State who joined the conference in 1990....

Illini’s academic standards are too high for some

Photo source: Illinois Loyalty For all you Illini fans, we all know how much DT Josh Brent has meant for the team and the defensive line. In 2009 he performed solidly amassing 29 tackles, 3 sacks, and 3 forced fumbles.  If you are wondering why you haven’t seen him on Peabody Drive heading towards the ARC this semester, it’s because he is no longer a student. Brent is currently dealing with serious academic issues. So much so, he is...

Introducing the new Paul Hornung Award

Because there aren’t enough college football awards, the Louisville Sports Commission announced the creation of the Paul Hornung Award. This award will be given annually to the nation’s most versatile college football player. For those of you who don’t recognize the name, you have to dig deep into Notre Dame history. Paul Hornung, nicknamed the “Golden Boy,” was one of the greatest players to ever play the game and certainly the greatest coming out of South Bend. When I...
