Virginia Tech needs new donors

Virginia Tech needs your help, buy season tickets!

Since Frank Beamer took over the reins at Virginia Tech, he has brought nothing but success to the program. Regardless of whoever Tech hosted at Lane Stadium, fans came out in troves to see Beamer Ball. However, with the economy, lack of impressive wins, and no national championship, the donor base is apparently receding. This is most evident in season tickets sales.

Donors are always first in line when it comes to season tickets, but for the 2011 season, 1,500 donors declined to renew their season tickets. This means Tech had no choice but to open up sales to the public, something the school hasn’t done in quite some time. The school’s athletic director, Sandy Smith, said this is the first time in six years the school opened up tickets sales to the public.

Virginia Tech, which houses over 66,000 fans, has a home sellout streak dating back to 1998. It is pretty safe to say that the public will fill the gap left by the donors, but this is certainly a premonition of things to come. Virginia Tech’s 81 consecutive sellout streak isn’t in jeopardy of falling, but until Virginia Tech can win the big games (Boise State and Stanford) and the little games (James Madison), all signs are pointing to continued attrition. This is most apparent in Tech’s traveling fan base. Tech, among other programs, continues to struggle selling its allotment for bowl games, most recently Tech fell well short of the 17,500 Orange Bowl tickets allotted against Stanford.

So for all you Tech fans, if you have $288 lying around, pick up your season tickets at hokietickets.com.
