The Michigan Wolverines really wanted to play the Air Force Academy in 2012. So much so, AF athletic director, Hans Mueh stated that since mid-November of 2010, Michigan was incessantly contacting and pushing to schedule a one-game deal in 2012. What eventually made the decision easy for Air Force, outside the free national exposure from playing in the Big House and the Mountain West smoothing their shake-up, was Michigan agreed to pay the Falcons $1.1 million to play the game.
Air Force could hardly refuse the sweet deal and signed on the dotted line. The game is scheduled for September 8, 2012, Michigan’s season home-opener. The question remains, will this game prove to be costly for the 2012 Wolverines who open the season with an extremely challenging non-conference schedule (Alabama, Air Force & Notre Dame).
