A promising linebacker, Malcolm Cater (#4) was kicked-off the team after he was arrested for burglary over the weekend.

Another “snatch and grab” plays victim to the Syracuse Orange. Freshman linebacker Malcolm Cater was kicked-off the team this weekend for burglary, grand larceny, and petit larceny. According to the police report, Cater was arrested Saturday morning for burglarizing two apartments on Friday night and one apartment over Thanksgiving break.

Over the weekend, Cater was seen by several witnesses carrying a flat-screen television at 3 a.m. to his 120 Lamreth Lane apartment. A witness was suspicious and contacted the police. When police arrived at the scene, they followed footstep tracks in the snow that led them from the burglarized apartment right to Cater’s front door. After obtaining a search warrant, police found and recovered all the stolen property in Cater’s apartment. Syracuse police are now investigating whether Cater is responsible for 3 other burglaries that occurred over the Thanksgiving holiday.

Though only a 19 year-old freshman, Cater was making an immediate impact for the bowl bound Orange. He played in all 12 games, recorded 13 tackles and 1 sack. He was a promising back-up to senior linebacker Derrell Smith and was slated to assume the starting position next season.

Couch Doug Marrone released a brief statement regarding the incident:  “I am aware of the criminal charges filed today against Malcolm Cater by the Syracuse Police Department,” he said. “Cater is no longer a part of the Syracuse University football program.”

Syracuse is set to play Kansas State in the inaugural Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium on December 30th.
