Texas DE Sam Acho is #1 in my book, takes home Academic Heisman.

Each season, the William V. Campbell Trophy, better known as the “Academic Heisman,” is awarded to college football’s top scholar-athlete. This prestigious accolade was recently awarded to Texas defensive end Sam Acho. Acho, a terrorizing player on the field, beat out Alabama QB Greg McElroy, Wisconsin QB Scott Tolzien, and FSU QB Christian Ponder.

During his 2010 campaign, Acho led the Longhorns with 9 sacks and 17 tackles for loss. He finished the season with 59 tackles, five forced fumbles, and five fumble recoveries. As a business major, Acho sports a 3.55 gpa. To acknowledge his accomplishments on-and-off the field, Acho will also receive a $25,000 postgraduate scholarship.

Last year, the Campbell was awarded to former Florida QB and current Broncos back-up Tim Tebow.

Acho will also add to his trophy case the 2010 Wuerffel Trophy for his outstanding academics and community service. Every year, his family makes medical mission trips to Nigeria to help provide free medical care to small villages with limited access.

A well deserved congratulations goes out to Texas’ Sam Acho.
