Coming off a disappointing 34-21 loss to Duke last Saturday, Navy (5-3) looks to rebound as the Midshipmen travel to Greenville, North Carolina, to take on Coach Ruffin McNeill and the East Carolina Pirates (5-3). Navy’s Ken Niumatalolo brings a high powered triple threat option that ranks 10th in rushing (258.6 yds/game) for the first time ever to Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.
Navy QB Ricky Dobbs is having a sensational senior season passing for 955 yards and rushing for 552 yards with 16 total TDs. To date, the preseason Heisman hopeful amassed 2,250 career rushing yards which ranks 7th best on Navy’s career rushing list. Dobbs only needs 62 more yards to pass Shun White for 6th all-time. There is no doubt Dobbs will surpass White as he faces an ECU rushing defense that yields 184.1 yds/game on the ground.
If Navy expects any success, the defense must step-it-up against ECU’s offensive aerial attack. ECU ranks 9th in the country in passing offense (304.1 yds/game) averaging over 36 points/game. WR Dwayne Harris has been lights out hauling in 63 receptions for 750 yards and 6 TDs. When Harris touches the ball, he is good for 11.9 yds/catch.
Both programs have a lot riding on the line as a win makes either team bowl eligible. Though these two teams have only faced each other on one occasion, it doesn’t take away from the magnitude of the game and the importance of a win.
